A small but lively crowd of people clapped excitedly as John Keene, president of the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust, cut the red rope Tuesday, signaling the opening of the Martha’s Vineyard Seafood Collaborative. The red rope was a significant symbol because it is a weak line that’s mandatory for fishermen to use for traps […] ....

Trump signs Young Fishermen's Development Act into law

Trump signs Young Fishermen s Development Act into law
President Donald Trump signed into law on Tuesday an act created to help young fishermen break into an industry that has seen increased barriers to entry and an aging workforce.
The Young Fishermen s Development Act will establish $2,000,000 in yearly grant funding to support educational and training programs for young individuals who want to get into commercial fishing. Organizations at the federal, state and local level are eligible for funding.
Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren were co-sponsors of the legislation.
“While our fishing industry is a vital and historic part of Massachusetts’ coastal economy, we cannot let it become lost to history,” said Markey in an official statement. “This valuable program will help more young people push off the dock into new careers in the fishing industry, powering the economy and our local communities.” ....

For the commercial fisheries division, the largest within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the preliminary FY2022 budget released by Governor Mike Dunleavy reflects a slight increase to $72.8 million, compared to nearly $68 million last year.
I think we did really well this year, said Sam Rabung, commercial fisheries division director, speaking last week at a United Fishermen of Alaska webinar. Where we re at right now, the legislature actually restored many of the cuts that we sustained in FY20 and the governor didn t veto all of them so we got some funds back in FY21, ....
