Sidewalks for Muscoy Project to Become Reality

Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gómez Reyes and the County of San Bernardino announced that the California Transportation Commission has voted to approve funding for the Muscoy Area Safe Routes to School Pedestrian Improvements Project. The funding will come from the state’s Active Transportation Program (ATP) Cycle 5 and will provide the project with a $1.88 million grant. The grant will be matched with funding from the County of San Bernardino.
The approval of the funding for the project represents the culmination of several years’ worth of collaborative efforts to improve the area. The project was first conceived at the “DREAM BIG IE” Youth Empowerment Summit hosted by Majority Leader Reyes in 2017. York County Libraries Part of The Story program will host their yearly event on March 27. Justina Ireland, a young adult fiction writer, will lead a virtual workshop on her book, Dread Nation . The novel is set during a zombie pandemic and focuses on teens creating social change after the Civil War.
After the discussion, the students will gather in small groups virtually to discuss what they ve learned from the author, and then collaborate to craft a message that puts out a call of action to the community. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. More than 120 people logged into Zoom for Island Voice’s 15th annual Youth Empowerment Summit on Saturday, which was centered around the theme of “How are you doing? Growing together.”
The theme was centered around the mental health challenges that many people, especially students, have been facing during the pandemic. It was also to provide tools such as mindfulness practices for managing these challenges. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. On Saturday, February 27th, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Canvas Institute will host Island Voice’s 15th Annual Youth Empowerment Summit.
“The Youth Summit is the only free event of its kind in Staten Island that brings our youth together to amplify their voice and awaken the power that they have to change their community and world,” according to the Canvas Institute.
Founder of the Canvas Institute, Bobby Digi, describes the summit as arriving with a sense of particular urgency this year. He referenced 16-year-old Jasier Kelly of Stapleton who committed suicide earlier this month as an example of the concerning mental health challenges that youth are experiencing during the pandemic.
