German museums to receive up to €25,000 for research into their Benin bronzes ahead of restitutions next year

The German Lost Art Foundation is offering museums emergency funding to research the provenance of Benin bronzes in their collections after the government and leading museums agreed to begin restituting looted Benin artefacts to Nigeria next year.
The foundation is offering grants of up to €25,000 for research projects into the history of individual objects or small collections lasting up to six months. About 25 German museums together hold around 1,000 artefacts that were plundered from Benin in a British military raid more than a century ago. ....

German Museums to Receive Funding for Research into Benin Bronzes Ahead of Repatriation

The German Lost Art Foundation is offering grants of up to €25,000 ($30,000) apiece to the country’s museums to be used for research into the provenance of the Benin bronzes currently in their possession, The Art Newspaper reports. Citing the brief time remaining before the objects, looted over a century ago by British soldiers from what was then called the Republic of Benin, are returned to Nigeria next year, as was recently promised by the German government, the foundation is characterizing the money as emergency funding. The Russian/American curator and art dealer Dasha Zhukova is to buy back Garage Magazine which she founded then sold to Vice Media in 2016. 
Vice Media Group announced it would end publishing the title following their 10th-anniversary edition, out this spring. Zhukova is in talks with a number of international publishers about realigning the magazine with the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow which she launched in 2008.
Vice Magazine is a publication and media empire co-founded by Gavin McInnes in the 1990s. McInnes (no longer at Vice) went on to found The Proud Boys a  neo-fascist political group supported by former President Donald Trump. If this isn’t enough, In the autumn of 2017, multiple stories were published citing allegations of sexual misconduct and a general “boys club” culture at Vice magazine’s parent company, Vice Media.
