County-Appointed IVCSD Director Bob Geis Retires

Bob Geis, the county-appointed Isla Vista Community Services District director, resigned from his position effective July 14 to join his wife in retirement. 
During the Isla Vista Community Services District’s (IVCSD) July 13 meeting, the board unanimously approved a resolution honoring Geis and his work.
Geis’ involvement with the IVCSD dates back to 2017, prior to the IVCSD having a revenue source to fund their operations. Aside from his involvement with the CSD, Geis has been heavily involved in Isla Vista over his 40-year career. Geis was the former county auditor-controller and often worked with the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District.  ....

Local Black Artist Paints "This Is More Than A Moment, This Is A Movement" at Little Acorn Park

On Juneteenth, a mural designed by local Black artist Chanté Glover depicting Martin Luther King Jr. and Gianna Floyd, the daughter of George Floyd, was unveiled at Little Acorn Park. 
Glover tried to incorporate symbolism throughout the piece that expressed the idea of Black Lives Matter being an ongoing movement, they said.
The mural, which was commissioned by the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District and UC Santa Barbara’s Associated Students, shows the two surrounded by a red ribbon and flying yellow canaries.
During the summer of 2020, UCSB alum Mikio Sacramento contacted the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District (IVRPD) about creating a mural in the college town reflecting on the Black Lives Matter Movement. Food Not Bombs Volunteers Gather at People's Park To Support Houseless Residents

Following the Isla Vista Recreation & Park District’s decision to transition People’s Park back to its recreational capacity — which would subsequently force houseless residents currently living there to leave the park — the non-profit, volunteer organization Food Not Bombs organized a community gathering around the encampment beginning June 1 to support the houseless residents.

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Not Bombs — an organization dedicated to taking food that would otherwise be discarded and providing communities with free vegetarian or vegan food — has been serving the Isla Vista houseless community with food and advocating on their behalf over the course of Isla Vista Recreation & ....
