LONGi Solar, said to be the worldâs largest solar photovoltaic (PV) technology company, is partnering with Durban-based solar PV panel manufacturer, ARTsolar, to meet the requirements of the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement (RMIPPP) programme, and beyond.
LONGi, a Tier 1 solar PV manufacturer listed on the Shanghai stock exchange, supplies more than 30 GW of high-efficiency solar wafers and PV panels worldwide annually, which comprises about a quarter of global market demand.

The South African government recently announced the eight preferred bidders in the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement (RMIPPP) programme. The bidders will provide an additional 1,845 megawatts which will be generated by various technologies and connected to the grid by August 2022. The project equates to R45bn of private-sector investment. The bidders are; ACWA Power Projects DAO, Oya Energy, Umoyilanga, and two projects for Mulilo Total and three for Karpowership SA. They use technologies including solar, photovoltaic, wind, liquefied natural gas and battery storage. Energy expert Chris Yelland puts a spotlight on more financial woes at Eskom. The state-owned power utility has ignored the mounting costs associated with the decommissioning of its nuclear energy facilities. In 2019, South Africa’s government pledged to extend the life of its commercial reactor, Koeberg by 20 years but stored nuclear waste will also eventually have to be disposed of. Eskom admits that the line item for decommissioning and disposal of nuclear waste is a place holder on the balance sheet and is, in fact, reflected as a liability in its debt-burdened books. Yelland examines the full extent of the hole in Eskom’s budget and reveals who will ultimately have to pay the bill when Koeberg reaches the end of life. – Melani Nathan ....
