Summer may be drawing to a close but there is plenty of athletics action to look forward to over the winter months with the domestic focus set to turn to cross country, road, mountain and trail events all over the country.
The rescheduled Jennian Homes New Zealand Track and Field Championships is the last major senior meet of an enthralling summer season that has brought many outstanding performances as our top athletes have built towards the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
This will be followed by the Interprovincial Championships for 12 and 13-year-olds over Easter weekend and the North Island and South Island Secondary School Championships a week later, all of which will be a real highlight for the hundreds of intermediate and high-school aged athletes participating. ....

Two women rescued near Penticton thanks to good cell phone coverage | iNFOnews

In two separate instances on Saturday, Penticton Search and Rescue were able to rescue two women using cell phone to locate them.
The first call came at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, about a woman in medical distress while snowshoeing on the Nickel Plate Nordic trails near Apex Ski Resort, according to a Penticton Search and Rescue media release.
A snowshoer was able to use his iPhone compass app to provide the exact location of the woman. Because of the urgency of the call, she was picked up by helicopter and flown to Penticton Airport where she was met by an ambulance. ....

The Thompson-Okanagan’s big ski resorts knew they would have a tough time of it this year with COVID-19 travel restrictions cutting deeply into their markets.
However, local support has gone a long way to keep the ski hills’ lights on until better days prevail.
Big White Ski Resort Senior Vice-President Michael Ballingall says local skiers are the foundation of his ski resort’s success, and one of COVID-19’s silver linings is an opportunity of a lifetime for locals to experience the resort.
“We’ve cancelled every booking beyond 150 km of the resort from mid-December to Feb. 6. That’s over $6 million in business,” Ballingall says. “There’s never been a better opportunity for local skiers to enjoy the resort. The best accommodations, and an uncrowded hill are theirs this year.” ....
