Community split on where Summit County should land in congressional district map

Community members, town staff and elected officials are split on where they want to see Summit County fall in Colorado’s redrawn congressional districts.
On Saturday, July 31, the Colorado Independent Redistricting Commissions visited the Summit County Community and Senior Center in Frisco to hear testimony from over 30 people. Individuals from Summit and surrounding counties were given the chance to speak about the preliminary maps for congressional and legislative districts drawn by the nonpartisan committee.
Colorado is one of six states that will get at least one new congressional seat in 2022 due to population gains. In June, the nonpartisan committee released preliminary maps, but these are to be tweaked once the latest U.S. Census data is released, which is expected to happen later this month. ....

Silverthorne, Summit County plan for new child care facility

As the Silverthorne community continues to grow, so does the need for child care on the northern end of Summit County.
Silverthorne and Summit County officials recognized the need for additional child care and partnered to build a new center at the Smith Ranch Neighborhood.
Silverthorne Town Manager Ryan Hyland said having a child care facility by Smith Ranch has been a goal since the start of the project. Hyland said the project is in its planning and building programming phase, working with architects and developers on what the facility would look like. Based on the current timeline, construction would begin in spring 2022 with the building set to open in January 2023. ....

Summit County commissioners discuss incentives to encourage residents to get vaccinated

Should Summit County offer incentives to residents as a way to push vaccination efforts, and if so, what would that look like?
The Board of Health contemplated that question at its meeting Tuesday, April 27. After Public Health Director Amy Wineland concluded her presentation on the county’s vaccination efforts, Summit County Commissioner Elisabeth Lawrence suggested offering incentives as a way to encourage residents to get vaccinated.
During Wineland’s presentation, she reported that Summit County is third in the state for getting its population immunized with one or more doses. Currently, 49.6% of Summit County’s residents are fully vaccinated, with 71.5% vaccinated with at least one dose. While these numbers look promising, Lawrence said she was worried about the percentage of vaccinated residents in the 20-29 age group. ....
