Murphy calls slave-wage accusations at NJ Hindu temple 'horrific'

ROBBINSVILLE Construction at the site of one of the world s largest Hindu temples on a sprawling property in Mercer County has been halted, amid an FBI raid and accusations of forced labor and slave-like wages involving Indian nationals.
“Violations at the BAPS temple are horrific, unfathomable,” Gov. Phil Murphy said at Wednesday s state briefing, when asked about the class-action lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday.
He continued it would be just awful if all of the violations and accused actions turned out to be validated.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court on behalf of nearly 200 men from India who say they were brought to the U.S. between 2018 and 2020, and paid $1.20 an hour for menial construction work. ....

Riverside Medical Group, in Secaucus, has launched a community partnership aimed at expanding access to the COVID-19 vaccine for New Jersey’s underserved populations. Riverside has teamed up with shelters, including the nonprofit Eva’s Village in Paterson, Covenant House New Jersey, and Helping the Homeless in Newark to bring COVID-19 vaccines to the homeless.
“The inequities that we’re seeing in vaccination administration is a problem, and we want to be part of the solution,” said Dr. Zeyad Baker, CEO of Riverside Medical Group. “Riverside has strong roots in our community and deeply-ingrained values of providing access to care when and where people need it. That’s why we’re proud to leverage our relationships with Eva’s Village and Helping the Homeless to bring vaccinations to the communities that otherwise wouldn’t have access.” ....

SECAUCUS When Cristian S. heard he was eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine, he wanted to get it done right away.
Cristian, 31, from Eva’s Village in Paterson a shelter for those who face homelessness, poverty and substance abuse was one of the nearly 100 individuals who were vaccinated Sunday at Riverside Medical Group in Secaucus. After receiving the vaccine, he said he felt fine.
Dr. Raj Brahmbhatt, the chief medical officer of Riverside Medical Group, told The Jersey Journal that although no Hudson County residents were vaccinated Sunday, they still have “lots” of the dose for others who are also eligible in the county’s underserved communities. ....
