Alumnus Patrick Carroll leads Delaware Humane Association
In an era where many people shift jobs with regularity, University of Delaware alumnus Patrick Carroll spent the past decade and a half connecting people with animals at the Delaware Humane Association (DHA). It’s an organization best known for its pet adoption services, but also offers spay and neuter services, low-cost vaccination clinics, a pet food pantry and works with wavering pet owners to keep pets in their homes.  
“We’ve evolved into a full-resource center for pet owners,” said Carroll, who graduated from UD in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. “We do whatever is needed in the community whether it is humane education, low-cost veterinary care and training.” ....

Rita Rawal one of countless students supported by UD’s Graduate College
Over the course of her 25 years and various positions at the University of Delaware, Mary Martin has always maintained an open-door policy for graduate students to stop in to see her at their convenience. Whether they are looking for guidance with their academic plans or finances, a friendly and empathetic person to talk with or any other kind of support, Martin has been there to listen and propose options for a solution to the problem. When Rita Rawal visited Martin, the current associate vice provost for graduate and professional education and associate dean of UD’s Graduate College, for the first time in January 2008, it changed her life forever. ....

In Memoriam: Melvin Reitnour


Retired leader of UD’s equine science program passes away at 87
Melvin Reitnour
After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky, he joined the University of Delaware faculty in 1968 as an assistant professor for the then-Department of Animal Science and Agricultural Biochemistry.
His 34-year UD career began teaching equine science with just one pony; Dr. Reitnour grew the stable to 17 thoroughbreds, brood mares, geldings and young stock. With a penchant for equine nutrition, he conducted more than 30 years of animal science research. He consulted for national equine magazines and the Equine Veterinary Research Directory Board.
Dr. Reitnour was the force behind the University’s equine science courses and a favorite teacher to many students. His “Light Horse” program afforded UD students the chance to learn about racing, hunting and recreational riding; the great majority of them came to him with zero riding experience.
