A funeral service with full military honors will be held Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. for beloved Montgomery Bell Athletics teacher and rifle coach Lt. Col. Joe Sharbel, who died this week from injuries sustained in a road accident. He was 60. The service will be held at Cathedral of Incarnation, 2015 West End Avenue and is limited to 300 attendees. A stream will be available at the MBA dining hall, where a celebration of life will begin at 11:30 that morning. Sharbel, a retired Marine, died Monday after the accident occurred last Friday. Sharbelâs Buell motorcycle was struck when a Ford Escape attempted a left turn into the Kroger parking lot, according to Metro Nashville policeâs initial investigation. The other driver, Anna Proctor, was released from Vanderbilt Medical Center with minor injuries. ....

In a year when much of the news out of Wilson County Schools has revolved around the coronavirus pandemic, it might be easy to overlook the achievements of the district, schools and students. Such successes are celebrated monthly at school board meetings, and the December event was no different. Board members and the public learned that Wilson County Schools students scored among the tops in the state on the ACT, W.A. Wright Elementary School earned a national honor, and students were recognized for excelling. For the 2019-20 school year, WCS seniors scored an overall average composite of 21.5 on the ACT, well above the stateâs 19.9 average and 0.6 points above the previous yearâs WCS average. That ranks the district 12th our of 127 in the state. Of the districts where more than 800 students took the test, WCS ranks second. ....
