Trial for 3 ex-cops charged in Floyd's death pushed to March | National News

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) â The trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting in the death of George Floyd will be pushed back to March 2022, in part to allow the publicity over Derek Chauvin s conviction to cool off, a judge ruled Thursday.
Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao were to face trial Aug. 23 on charges they aided and abetted both murder and manslaughter. Their co-defendant, Chauvin, was convicted in April of murder and manslaughter. All four officers also face federal charges that they violated Floydâs civil rights during his May 25 arrest.
Judge Peter Cahill said he moved the other officers trial so the federal case can go forward first. No date has been set for the federal case, but Cahill said it carries higher potential penalties. He also said he felt the need to put some distance between the three officersâ trial and Chauvinâs due to the high-profile nature of the case. ....

Now, the trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s death will be pushed back to March of next year. Thursday, May 13, a judge ruled that the trial of the three former Minneapolis cops charged in aiding and abetting the murder of George Floyd would be postponed until March of next year.
NBC News, reports J. Alexander Kueng, Tou Thao, and Thomas Lane were originally scheduled to stand trial in August. Chauvin, along with the three other men were indicted on federal civil rights charges last week. According to Judge Peter Cahill, he changed the date so that the federal case could go first, and so there would be time between Chauvin’s trial and the other three officers’. ....

A Minnesota judge has delayed until next year the trial for three former Minneapolis cops involved in George Floyd s death due to various concerns.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill ordered the postponement of the state trial for Thomas Lane, 37; Tou Thao, 34; and J. Alexander Kueng, 26, to March 2022.
The three former Minneapolis cops were originally set to face trial on Aug. 23, 2021 on charges they aided and abetted both murder and manslaughter, Crime Online reported.
Cahill said this move would allow the publicity surrounding Derek Chauvin s case to subside, as well as to prioritize the federal trial involving the former Minneapolis cops. ....
