'Afriforum's fight for Afrikaans aims to restore apartheid privileges at Unisa'

Johannesburg - Afriforum’s fight for reinstatement of Afrikaans as a language of learning and teaching at Unisa is intended to restore apartheid privileges.
Matthew Chaskalson SC has made this submission on behalf of Unisa at the Constitutional Court, which was hearing the university’s bid to appeal a ruling that declared its new language policy unconstitutional and unlawful.
Unisa lost to Afriforum at the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) last year, prompting its appeal application at the apex court.
The university adopted a language policy in 2016 that removed Afrikaans as a dual medium of teaching and learning along English.

Unisa’s executive director of legal services, Adv Modidima Mannya, has hauled vice-chancellor Prof Puleng LenkaBula to court after she suspended him for, among other things, allegedly abusing his position.
Mannya was placed on suspension on April 8 for three months after he rejected a proposal by LenkaBula to participate in what she termed, according to him, “a mediation”.
He has asked the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to suspend the vice-chancellor’s decision to suspend him pending the finalisation of the arbitration of the dispute.

High Court rules Unisa's decision to reduce 1st-year intake be set aside

JOHANNESBURG - The High Court in Pretoria has on Thursday ordered the University of South Africa (Unisa) to review and set aside its decision to reduce its 2021 intake of first-year students.
Unisa had decided to reduce its intake from 58,000 to 38,000 as per a directive from the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Student Command had taken Nzimande and the University to court to challenge the decision, to which the South African Human Rights Commission was admitted as an amicus.
The EFF and the commission found Unisa's position to be an impediment to the realisation of the right to further education. The High Court on Thursday agreed with the applicants and the commission.
