For every 100 litres of water treated and pumped through a network, about 41 are lost into the ground.
This is the result of SA’s creaking water supply infrastructure, which leaves communities cut off from a clean resource and sees embattled municipalities drowning in sewage as pipes burst and wastewater treatment works break down.

Iran and the US resumed talks in Vienna last week, and from news reports one might think the Middle East’s future rests on a result that restrains Iran’s aggression and nuclear ambitions. Yet other negotiations are afoot that may have far more impact on the region. They are not over weapons but over water.
In March Bahrain signed a $3m deal with Israeli state water company Mekorot to tap its knowledge on water desalination. That follows a similar deal in which Israeli start-up Watergen will provide Al Dahra Agricultural of the UAE with technology to produce drinking water from humidity in the air. Both deals come after Bahrain and the UAE normalised relations with Israel last year. ....

Saudi Arabia's SWCC, the Largest Desalination Corporation Globally, achieved a new Guinness World Record for the lowest Water Desalination Energy Consumption

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, April 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) was recognized by Guinness World Records for setting a global record in reducing energy consumption in water desalination to 2.271 kWh per cubic meter, cementing its position as a pioneer in promoting environmental sustainability, achieved this milestone by adopting innovative technologies that lower the use of power and cost of produced water in the desalination industry.
Guinness World Records stated that it verified the figure in March 2021.
The technology used in the plants is reverse osmosis (RO), which is by SWCC standards and specifications that is uniquely re-engineered to develop supply chains and reduce operational costs while achieving positive financial returns as an outcome of reducing electricity consumption from reverse osmosis plants by to 2.271 kWh per cubic meter. AVAIO Capital (“AVAIO”) is pleased to announce that Macquarie Capital has joined AVAIO as a partner in finalizing the development and construction of a new desalination facility in Belgium’s Port of Antwerp.
As an environmentally sustainable water source, the project will serve to substantially improve the resiliency of the Antwerp region’s water supply. Approximately forty per cent of the water sourced from the Albert Canal, the primary source of drinking water for the Antwerp region, is consumed by the industrial sector, stressing the local water supply. Clean water is a scarce resource in dry, off-grid environments. In these areas, conventional water sources such as snowfall, rainfall, river runoff and groundwater are rare if not completely absent. But innovative water sourcing methods could help address that scarcity.
