Food Rescue US is a non-profit that connects food donors like Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, and event venues with shelters and soup kitchensand it’s done all through a website.
“What we do is rescue unsold, unused food and directly transfer it to the people who need it,” said Ellen Bowen, the site director for Food Rescue US in Miami.
The organization connects with a local volunteer to pick up and drop off the food directly.
“Forty percent of all food is wasted, yet one in five people go to bed hungry every single night,” Bowen said. ....

The virtual conferencing that has replaced large, in-person gatherings in the age of COVID-19 represents a drastic reduction in carbon emissions, but those online meetings still come with their own environmental costs, new research from the University of Michigan shows.
The research offers a framework for analyzing and tallying the carbon emissions of an online conference based on factors that include everything from energy used by servers and monitors to the resources used to manufacture and distribute the computers involved.
It also includes a case study showing that a May 2020 virtual conference held by the AirMiners carbon removal networking community produced 66 times less greenhouse gas emissions that an in-person gathering in San Francisco would have. ....

Advanced Science from scientists at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center and U-M College of Engineering highlights development in cancer-fighting efforts. The research details how the exosomes of natural killer cells (NK cells) can be targeted, harvested, and redirected to attack cancer cells.
Exosomes are small sacs of proteins and other molecules that are naturally released by almost every type of cell in the body, says co-author Yoon-Tae Kang, Ph.D. In this case, we wanted to expand our understanding of NK exosomes and try to harness their cancer-killing potential. ....
