As the crippled Waikato District Health Board scrambles to resurrect its hacked IT systems, there is little clarity about how damaging the cyberattack was – or could yet become.
Health Minister Andrew Little has confirmed patient data may have been stolen. Waikato District Health Board chief executive Kevin Snee has said it was not clear if any was stolen and patient data “should be recoverable”.
A week after the hackers struck the district health board, which as the fifth largest in the country provides care to more than 430,000 people, the IT systems remain unaccessible and there are questions than answers. ....

It s under investigation by police and the malicious actor could be watching anything that s said, Waikato DHB chief executive Kevin Snee said.
Health Minister Andrew Little says the Government will not pay a ransom as the crippled Waikato District Health Board scrambles to resurrect its hacked IT systems.
“The New Zealand Government will not pay ransoms to criminals because this will encourage further offending,” Little said.
There is little clarity about how damaging last week’s cyber attack was – or could yet become – and Little’s comment came as he acknowledged the alleged hackers had made contact with media outlets. ....

Invercargill man sentenced for having hundreds of 'cached' bestiality images


An Invercargill man was sentenced to intensive supervision and community work for objectionable publication offences.
A warning system built into a Canadian messaging app alerted New Zealand authorities that someone in Invercargill had uploaded a child exploitation image.
The apps trust and safety team, which works to identify child exploitation material offences alerted Canadian police in November 2018, which then triggered an investigation into a labourer living in Invercargill.
The messaging app company provided the IP address used by the cellphone to upload the image, and inquiries in New Zealand identified that the address belonged to the man s house.
In March 2019, police seized computers, external hard drives, gaming consoles, tablets and a phone, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 from the man s house. However, police did not find the device referenced by Canadian authorities. ....
