Dana Young: Lauding another Class of 2021

In addition to completing the first few weeks of summer quarter at Treasure Valley Community College, we also celebrated the graduation of High School Equivalency Program (HEP) students. Like our commencement ceremonies in June, we had originally planned to recognize these graduates with a drive-through event since COVID-19 restrictions limited indoor gatherings. A few days before the event, with temperatures well-above 100 degrees, we were afraid we would have to cancel the celebration, since the heat would be unbearable for an outside activity.
Fortunately, COVID restrictions in Oregon were lifted the day before the graduation ceremonies, and we were able to move the celebration indoors to the Meyer-McLean Theater in the Four Rivers Cultural Center last Thursday. Thanks to the Cultural Center staff and Executive Director Matt Stringer for helping save this celebration. And thank you, to the HEP team at TVCC for your flexibility. ....

Sophomore named semifinalist for Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship
Susana Olivo Sandoval was selected as a semifinalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. She was one of 406 semifinalists chosen from a pool of more than 1,500 applicants. Sandoval will learn if she wins the scholarship in April.
Susana Olivo Sandoval s grandmother gave her a piece of advice that she follows regularly: You can regret something once you do it, but don t regret not doing something.
As a first-generation student at the University of North Georgia (UNG), Sandoval does not regret pursuing all avenues to fund her college education. Her attempts have paid off. Juan Velasquez never planned to attend the University of North Georgia (UNG).
The Dalton, Georgia, resident had a full scholarship to a college in Kentucky. But a family situation arose, making him the sole provider and keeping him at home.
Then Velasquez met Sarah (Junco) Petito, the former recruiter for UNG s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). The federally funded program helps students from migrant and/or seasonal farm work backgrounds transition into college life for the first year.
