Former South Dakota House majority leader dies
A former South Dakota lawmaker who previously served as the state s House majority leader unexpectedly died Friday of a suspected heart attack. He was 53.
David Lust, a Republican and attorney based in Rapid City, passed away early in the morning, according to his law firm, Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson & Ashmore.
The firm, where Lust was a partner, said in a statement shared with the Sioux Falls Argus Leader that the former state representative was a strong leader for our state, his community, and our law firm, and most importantly a loving father and husband. ....

RAPID CITY, S.D. Throughout the pandemic, paycheck protection program funds were distributed to businesses, allowing them to pay employees, but those funds have dried up, and some small businesses are still in need of resources for the upcoming year.
Although PPP funds will no longer be distributed, there are a number of programs, loans and grants businesses can use to stay afloat if necessary. Through the SBA, there is the Economic Injury Disaster Loan and Shuttered Venue Operators Grant for music venues and museums.
With record growth in major industries across the state, many South Dakota businesses are now moving past survival, and trying to grow and fully staff their businesses. ....

Black Hills Faces Serious Housing Shortage As Region Grows

More and more people are moving to the Black Hills and the region is already short on housing, especially affordable units.
Community and housing leaders discussed the issue during an Elevate Rapid City event last week. They said this problem is bad news for residents and hinders economic growth.
Between 30,000 and 40,000 people are expected to move to the Black Hills in the next 10 years, according to Elevate CEO Tom Johnson.
The city needs 3,500 housing units costing no more than $900 a month, and 1,459 rental units costing no more than $500 a month.
Several panelists at the Elevate event said they know people who had to turn down job offers because they couldn’t afford to move to the Black Hills. They also said some businesses have decided not to open or expand in the area due to the housing crisis.   ....
