The games are always a popular event hosted by Rapid City Parks and Recreation. It’s an opportunity for those over the age of 50 to get active and compete in basketball, golf, swimming, track, and even a bean bag toss. “Everybody is coming out,” said parks and recs specialist, Lindsey Myers. “They will train all year just to, this is something they look forward to every year. A good way to get them out, active, having fun, being competitive, and just feeling young again .”

July 16, 2021 SPEARFISH, S.D. — The life of a retiree can be carefree, and for a group in Spearfish, it’s an opportunity to give back to the community. Popular tourist spot, the D.C. Booth Historical National Fish Hatchery and Archives is able to run smoothly because of this special set of volunteers, and surprisingly, many are modern day nomads. “We can’t remember who came up with 1st we said well let’s just go out and join the circus,” said volunteer Jim Wallace. “So that’s what we did and that’s what we’ve been doing now for what we’re in our fifth year.”
KNBN NewsCenter1 July 15, 2021 SPEARFISH, S.D. — As part of the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery’s125th anniversary, several locals decided to create a children’s book, Let’s Feed the Fish. With nearly 3,000 school kids as visitors each year, it serves as a walking guide and history of the facility. The project took nearly nine months to complete, and was co-authored by three Spearfish natives. “We walked all around, and we said, this has to be the story of just walking and seeing, and learning all about the fish hatchery,” said author, Joanna Jones. “And it was. It was just wonderful, and then of course, by the time we finally got done with the book, it was like. What’s most important? Let’s feed the fish!”
KNBN NewsCenter1 July 13, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. — Post-pandemic, there has been an increase in travel nationwide, and for the Rapid City Regional Airport, that has meant record breaking passenger numbers. With 25 nonstop routes to 24 destinations, there have been an abundance of flights available to travelers. In June, the airport saw a total of 87,249 passengers, in comparison to just over 23,000 last year, and over 80,000 in 2019. “Our airport tends to be hyper-seasonal, and a lot of airports over the last 12 months have been really hurting for traffic and really hurting for people coming through the terminal,” said Executive Director, Patrick Dame. “So, we’ve worked hard to get the airlines to restore flights to our community, to restore seats and the availability for people to be able to come here and people here to be able to leave. And with that, with the added seats and the added flights that we’ve got in the market, it really created a perfect storm for us to start to produce some record numbers.”

Although PPP funds will no longer be distributed, there are a number of programs, loans and grants businesses can use to stay afloat if necessary. Through the SBA, there is the Economic Injury Disaster Loan and Shuttered Venue Operators Grant for music venues and museums. With record growth in major industries across the state, many South Dakota businesses are now moving past survival, and trying to grow and fully staff their businesses.
