What is ethics dumping?

Exporting unethical practices to low- and middle-income countries has become the new face of exploitative research, writes Doris Schroeder
The Biologist 66(3) p22-25
Bioscientists and biomedical scientists rely heavily on external resources to do their research
. While philosophers can publish groundbreaking research after a quiet stay in a mountain hut, bioscientists generally need access to research participants, genetic samples, microorganisms and experimental animals, to name just a few resources. This means that bioscience is often the focus of debates in research ethics.
Nazi medical experiments and the Tuskegee trials in the US, where black men with syphilis were denied treatment to see how the disease progresses naturally, are examples of horrendously exploitative biomedical research. ....

Vopak is investing in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for the storage of waste-based feedstocks for the production of biofuels such as biodiesel and bio-jet-fuel.
The market for energy from renewable sources in Europe is rising, in part as a result of the Renewable Energy Directive II of the EU. In total, 16 new tanks with a combined capacity of 64 000 m
3 will be built at Vopak Terminal Vlaardingen, located in the Port of Rotterdam. The renewable feedstocks that can be stored in the new tanks are waste materials, such as used cooking oil and tallow.
Vopak Terminal Vlaardingen already has extensive experience in storing these types of products. The terminal is strategically located within the Port of Rotterdam and is well connected for logistics by vessels, barges, trucks and trains. ....

Essar, Fulcrum BioEnergy announce 600 mn pound waste-to-fuel plant in UK

Essar Group and Fulcrum BioEnergy Ltd on Monday announced a 600 million pounds waste-to-fuel plant in North West of England that will convert non-recyclable household waste into aviation fuel for use by airlines.
This innovative bio-refinery will convert several hundred thousand tonnes of pre-processed waste, which would have otherwise been destined for incineration or landfill, into approximately 100 million litres of low carbon sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually, they said in a statement.
The project, which will see an investment of approximately 600 million pounds, will use Fulcrum s proven waste-to-fuel process, which is already being deployed at its pioneering facility outside of Reno, Nevada in the US, where operations are due to begin later this year. ....
