Karachi: Rice exporters on Thursday came hard on a Prime Minister’s aide for underestimating the export potential of Pakistani basmati that fetches the country more than $800 million.
Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) said the statement regarding no demand of basmati rice in the world is misleading, as Pakistan exports basmati worth more than $800 million every year.
REAP expressed serious concern over a public statement by Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Agriculture Jamshed Cheema that demand in export markets is mostly for coarse rice while the Pakistani farmers are intoxicated with basmati rice and should shift to production of coarse rice. ....

LAHORE: Reacting to a news item “NAB’s request: Excise Dept suspends registration of 384 vehicles” published in The News, former Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Dr Mujahid Kamran has said he had not owned a personal vehicle for at least last one decade, maybe a decade and a half.
“Therefore, it is both meaningless and mala-fide on the part of NAB to include my name in the list. Through the columns of your esteemed paper I would like to ask the Chairman NAB to direct a correction in the list and remove my name. I may add, and NAB knows it very well, have maliciously scoured my bank accounts and other records over the years, that not only do I not own a vehicle, I do not have enough money to buy even a1300 cc car. ....

SSS reports Q1 2021 online funeral claim transactions up by 13.6%

THE Social Security System (SSS) recorded 11,088 online transactions for funeral benefit claims in the first quarter of 2021, up by 13.6 percent from 9,762 transactions recorded in the second semester of last year.
SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Aurora C. Ignacio attributed the significant increase to the implementation of mandatory online transactions and checkless disbursements in 2020.
“In line with our campaign ExpreSSS fast, simple, and easy transactions with SSS we committed to expanding our online services with the inclusion of funeral benefit applications last July 2020, as part of the available e-services under the My.SSS portal. Member-claimants may now receive their benefits through checkless disbursements through the Unified Multipurpose Identification (Umid) card enrolled as ATM. If without Umid card enrolled as ATM, the funeral benefit may be credited to Philippine Electronic Fund Transfer & Syst ....
