Researchers develop new urban planning GIS tool to improve urban climate resilience

2021 0129 New urban planning GIS tool to improve urban climate resilience-1
Dr Yuan Chao showing the results of air temperature increase by anthropogenic heat in various regions using the GIS tool developed by his team.
Singapore has warmed notably since the mid-1970s when rapid urbanisation took place, at a rate of 0.25 degrees Celsius per decade according to the Meteorological Service Singapore. The rate is higher than the global average rate of 0.17 degree Celsius per decade since 1970, based on data from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. If the current urban development approach remains unchanged, local warming will lead to a rise in electricity demand for cooling and the risk of residents suffering from heat stress. ....

Simulation helps refine new medical guidelines

Washington [US], January 29 (ANI): A new study from UT Southwestern s Department of Pediatrics has revealed that a viable way to quickly refine and educate new medical guidelines and educate hospital staff in new procedures is through simulation.
The findings published recently in the journal Pediatric Quality and Safety and originally shaped around new COVID-19-related pediatric resuscitation procedures at UTSW and Children s Health, could eventually be used to help implement other types of guidelines at medical centres nationwide.
For decades, U.S. hospitals have used the same standard procedures for CPR and intubation. But when the COVID-19 pandemic began early last year, some details of these procedures needed to change explains Blake E. Nichols, M.D., assistant professor of paediatrics at UTSW and a critical care physician at Children ....

A Major Key toward Uncovering the Asteroid Collision Process and the deep Earths Dynamics

Posted January 22nd, 2021 for JAMSTEC
1. Overview
A research group led by Dr. Naotaka Tomioka, Senior Researcher at the Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (KOCHI JAMSTEC) gave the mineral name “poirierite” to a high-pressure phase with the chemical composition of olivine that was found in shocked meteorites. Poirierite has now been officially approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association.
Olivine (peridot) is abundantly found not just in the Earth s upper mantle, but also in stony meteorites. Using a high-resolution electron microscope, the research group examined a meteorite that have been exposed to high-temperature and high-pressure environments caused by a mutual collision of asteroids. As a result, the research group made the world’s first discovery of a high-pressure phase of olivine called the “epsilon phase” in 2017 (more information c ....
