(Bandon, Oregon) – A small earthquake shook off the southern Oregon coast early Saturday morning, clocking in at a minor 4.0 in magnitude. Meanwhile, a larger quake rattled parts of southern Alaska a bit later in the day, reminding some Oregonians of the quake there that caused a tsunami here in the 60s.

The undersea quake took place about 250 miles off the south coast, this time in more of a straight line westward from Dunes City instead of the usual Coos Bay or Reedsport. At a magnitude 4.0 it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami; it takes at least a 7.0 to do that. The quake shook at 5:33 a.m. Saturday at a depth of about six miles. ....

Two Stranded Turtles on Oregon Coast - One With 'Miracle' Surprise

Reedsport to Brookings, places to stay; winter deals
This happens because they are following warm water currents northward and then the currents stop somewhere on this coastline.
Oregon Coast Aquarium was called about the turtle in the Nelscott section of town, and the aquarium’s Curator of Fish and Invertebrates Evonne Mochon-Collura responded. She called Jim Rice of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, who stationed a volunteer to manage the area until he picked the animal up and brought it to the Aquarium for triage.
OCA said during standard triage protocols, it was determined that the turtle was a sub-adult female. Her temperature registered as 50°F. A healthy temperature for a turtle is around 75°F. ....

(Coos Bay, Oregon) – The mighty Pacific Ocean of the Oregon coast really lives up to that title at one spot on the south coast: Shore Acres State Park near Charleston / Coos Bay. It’s known as the number one spot for oceanic fireworks and watery pyrotechnics, with waves that explode into the air well over 100 feet. All it takes is the average heavy surf day, and maybe not necessarily one of those surf advisories from the National Weather Service. ....

Weird News: Lamprey Falls from Sky | Oregon Coast Fish Older Than Dinos

Reedsport to Brookings, places to stay; winter deals
On Thursday morning, the Ally Blevins of Seaside and her family discovered a strange sight in their backyard: a lamprey was lying there, far from the ocean.
“It appeared that this slimy, slithering creature had fallen out of the sky and landed in their yard,” Boothe said.
It turned out the lamprey was still alive. Blevins called the aquarium and manager Keith Chandler rushed over to try and figure out what was going on. Plopping the small eel into a container of salt water, he then quickly drove it to the aquarium. ....
