SOFIA, Bulgaria - Canada s Sam Stewart was seconds away from qualifying for her first Olympic Games.
But the 31-year-old from London, Ont., saw her Tokyo dreams disappear with a double leg takedown by Romanian opponent Andreea Beatrice Ana with under five seconds to go at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament on Friday.
After the 4-2 loss, Stewart talked about a tough pre-Olympic season all but derailed by COVID-19.
I think I wrestled really well, all things considered, Stewart told Wrestling Canada. It s been really hard to train and prepare for this event with everything that s happened. I definitely think I put my best foot forward. ....

NEW DELHI, Apr 22: Former Asian champion Amit Dhankar (74kg) today replaced national gold-medallist Sandeep Mann in the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, signalling the end of the road for veteran Sushil Kumar.
The tournament, to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from May 6-9, will be the last qualifying event before the Tokyo Games.
One of the country’s most accomplished athletes, Sushil won a silver in the 2012 London Olympics, four years after a bronze in Beijing.
After not being considered for selection, the 37-year-old Sushil said, “To stay alive is more important at this stage. I have not spoken to WFI as yet, will speak to them.” ....

Kenyan boxing head coach Musa Benjamin has thanked the country s National Olympic Committee for their financial support on the road to Tokyo 2020.
Two Kenyan boxers have already booked their places at this year s rearranged Games through last year s African qualifier in Senegal - Nick Okoth in the men s featherweight and Christine Ongare in the women s flyweight.
The team known as the hit squad is hoping more will qualify through the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, which was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now tentatively planned for June. ....
