Wealthy Nigerians, Organisations Urged to Fund Research

Fadekemi Ajakaiye
The President of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Builder Kunle Awobodu has urged wealthy Nigerians to invest in research for societal development.
Awobodu, who affirmed his firm belief in the potentials of the black man for excellence, made the call for investment in research at the second edition of lecture series of the Association of Builders in Academia. Awobodu equally challenged participants to also explore local sources of funding for their research endeavours. Bringing research outputs to a finished level for society’s adoption is a crucial part of the research ecosystem, he averred.
Awobodu elucidated on the NIOB’s commitment to research manifested in its ongoing efforts at realising the development of a world class research centre in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Part of the key objectives of the Centre is to research into alternative building materials and promotion of skills for the nation’s development.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 25, 2021 (Antara/Bernama-AsiaNet) - On the occasion of World Biodiversity Day, a growing number of elected officials, Indigenous leaders, scientists, and other experts are calling on ASEAN leaders to endorse ambitious proposals to protect biodiversity and advance Indigenous rights through the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.
After a year-long delay, the official negotiations of the Convention on Biological Diversity have resumed this month and are scheduled to conclude in Kunming, China this October. As delegates from 196 countries--including all of the ASEAN member states--participate in the negotiations, eyes are on the ASEAN region. As one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, ASEAN member states have a crucial role to play in developing a successful global strategy to safeguard biodiversity. ASEAN is a leader of the Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries that champion conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity since its inception in 2002 and harbours 70% of global biodiversity.

A search committee looking for the next president of Florida State University on Tuesday developed a short list of nine candidates that includes state education commissioner Richard Corcoran.
The committee chose Corcoran and the others from a candidate pool of 22 people. Two other high-profile candidates — Frank Brogan and Jeff Kottkamp, who served terms as Florida lieutenant governor — did not make the list.

Richard Corcoran applies for FSU presidency

Richard Corcoran applies for FSU presidency
Rumors had been swirling for weeks.
Education Commissioner
Richard Corcoran has officially thrown his hat in the ring to become the next President of Florida State University.
A list of applicants was released by the FSU search commission, which met at 10 a.m. Tuesday to discuss those who put their names forward.
The submission marks the culmination of rumors swirling since mid-April that the Land O’ Lakes Republican wanted the job.
FSU President
John Thrasher announced his retirement in September.
Both Thrasher and Corcoran previously served as Florida House Speaker. Corcoran’s tenure ran from 2016 to 2018 and was punctuated by landmark school-choice expansions. Corcoran has continued to advocate for academic options like charter schools and the state’s private school voucher program.
