Thompson beaten in Miramar, Gayle and Thomas-Dodd secure victories


Jamaica s Elaine Thompson-Herah had to settle for fourth in the 200m in Miramar, Florida.
Reigning Olympic sprint double champion Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica was beaten into fourth place in the women’s 200m at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting in Miramar, Florida on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Thompson-Herah clocked 22.44 seconds in what was her first appearance over the distance this season.

 Briana Williams, a double Under-20 world champion, was left back in sixth place in 22.93 seconds.
Jenna Prandini of the USA came through to win in a wind-assisted 22.29 (2.3m/s) to finish ahead of world silver medallist Brittany Brown (22.39) with 2016 world U20 champion Candace Hill taking third in 22.43. ....

That has certainly been the case for athletics in recent months with the desire for top-level indoor competition being met thanks to the efforts from adaptable and inventive meeting organisers.
It meant that the
World Athletics Indoor Tour was able to go ahead with 25 competitions taking place safely in 11 different countries across Europe and North America. In all, 1353 athletes from 84 countries participated in the wider series of Gold, Silver and Bronze level meetings with all six continental areas represented.

Impressive wins by Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Ajla Del Ponte and Mondo Duplantis capped the final day of the 2021 European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, on Sunday (7).
Ingebrigtsen, who won the 1500m title on Friday, became the only double individual winner at these championships after his convincing 3000m victory, adding to the 1500m and 5000m double triumph at the 2018 championships outdoors that signalled his international breakthrough.
A sluggish early pace played nicely into the 20-year-old s hands, who took his turn with the early lead before settling into a relaxed steady rhythm mid-pack.
