지난 1961년 지참금 금지법 도입에도 불구하고 인도에서는 여전히 결혼 지참금 문화인 다우리 (Dowry)가 유지되고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
영국 일간 BBC는 5일(현지시간) 최근 발표한 세계은행 리서치그룹 분석결과를 인용해 이처럼 보도했다.
BBC에 따르면 세계은행 리서치그룹은 1960년부터 2008년까지 인도 17개주 농촌 결혼 4만건을 추적했다. 그 결과 95%가 여전히 지참금을 주고 받은 것으로 나타났다.
지참금은 결혼시 신부 측이 신랑 측에 현금이나 현물을 주는 풍습이다. 이는 남녀불평등 문제로 나아가 남아선호사상을 강화시킨다는 비판을 받아왔다. 결국 인도는 지난 1961년 지참금 을 법으로 금지했다.
