Tackling Stunting in Rwanda to Build Human Capital: Early Achievements and Strategic Priorities - Rwanda

Tackling Stunting in Rwanda to Build Human Capital: Early Achievements and Strategic Priorities
Format
With World Bank support, the government of Rwanda has developed a bold new approach to tackle stunting, chronic malnutrition, with an enhanced package of multisectoral interventions. As a result, there has been a significant uptake in health and nutrition services, such as growth monitoring and micronutrient supplementation, expanded access to early childhood development services, and reforms to community-based delivery platforms.
Challenge
Rwanda has made remarkable progress on infant, child and maternal mortality, meeting or exceeding most goals. However, stunting remained stubbornly high at about 38 percent in 2015 and affected nearly 50 percent of the poorest children. In 2017, the government made a high-level political commitment to drastically reduce stunting, recognizing it impeded cognitive development, educational attainment, and lifetime earnings and de ....

The Recurrent Costs and Reform Financing project has supported day-to-day functioning and financial management systems of key ministries of the federal and subnational governments in Somalia. Specifically, through its three phases, the project has supported the federal dialogue and funded basic services critical for peace building and reconstruction of the fragile state.
Challenge
After more than twenty years of conflict, Somalia is currently on a path of political stabilization and reconstruction.  Important milestones include the adoption of the Provisional Constitution in 2012, peaceful presidential elections in 2012 and 2017, and an agreement on a federal political system, including the establishment of Federal Member States (FMS).  However, numerous challenges prevail, such as weak government capacity, asymmetric federal structures, security concerns, human capital deficits, and low levels of sta ....

The Malawi Financial Sector Technical Assistance Project unlocked opportunities for inclusive growth for banks, micro-finance institutions, and savings and credit cooperatives by transforming the digital space. As a result, access to finance in the country increased. The proportion of women within the adult population that was formally banked, for example, increased from 17 percent in 2011 to 38.5 percent in 2018.
Challenge
The Financial Sector Technical Assistance Project (FSTAP) was conceived in 2011 when the financial sector’s contribution towards growth and poverty reduction in Malawi was limited. Much more was needed to expand and improve financial access.  At that time, out of the 19 percent of the adult population, only 17 percent were banked.  The business environment was equally challenging. While the country had achieved notable refo ....

Challenge
From August 2018 to June 2019, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) fought the second largest Ebola outbreak in history. It took place amid overlapping crises including food insecurity, massive forced displacement, and persistent armed conflict. With a total of 3,420 cases, the outbreak claimed 2,287 lives in 29 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. These hosted 8.5 million poor people, including 6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, thus stretching traditional coping mechanisms to the limit. ....
