A scheme launched in seven Plymouth schools ten years ago by a Torpoint headteacher and a Devonport police sergeant which helps safeguard and support children suffering from domestic violence is now embedded in all 43 police forces across the country.
The landmark was reached on April 12 this year when Bedfordshire Police launched Operation Encompass in their Luton area. The last few months has seen Bedfordshire, along with Dorset and Avon and Somerset forces, sign up to the scheme which over the last decade has become an award-winning nationwide project praised by Government ministers, child psychologists, Chief Constables, education bosses and ....

Police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez has seen her term in office extended by the coronavirus crisis

As we move towards the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May, I’ve been reflecting on my first term in this office which, due to the pandemic, has actually been a year longer than it should have been.
That said, I really feel our office has made the most of this unexpected extension.
Between 2016 and 2021 the force has welcomed an additional 317 officers, as well as 10 tri-service safety officers in rural Cornish communities. Seven community responders – firefighters with full police powers – have also been deployed in collaboration with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, with four police and fire community support officers serving rural North Devon. After months of extraordinary challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic it is fantastic this week to be able to write about something positive – the fact that in June Cornwall will host the leaders of the G7 countries.
This is clearly a major boost for our part of the world. The event will bring Presidents, chancellors and Prime Ministers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US to Carbis Bay, with neighbouring St Ives and other sites in Cornwall hosting scores of international delegates, security personnel and media. Also invited this year are leaders from Australia, India and South Korea. ....
