Councillors are asking for additional police officers and more CCTV cameras to be put in place following a surge in youth anti-social behaviour in their borough. Ribble Valley Conservative councillors Ged Mirfin and Ricky Newmark raised the issue during a meeting of the borough council’s parish liaison committee at the end of June, only to reiterate the need for increased surveillance this week, following an incident in which teenagers caused damage to Whalley Abbey. During the meeting, councillors spoke with the inspector for the Ribble Valley, Andy Ainsworth, and quizzed the new chief constable for Lancashire, Chris Rowley, over police funding for the area as well as the impact of the new rural taskforce. ....

Police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez has seen her term in office extended by the coronavirus crisis - Credit: Devon and Cornwall PCC As we move towards the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May, I’ve been reflecting on my first term in this office which, due to the pandemic, has actually been a year longer than it should have been. That said, I really feel our office has made the most of this unexpected extension. Between 2016 and 2021 the force has welcomed an additional 317 officers, as well as 10 tri-service safety officers in rural Cornish communities. Seven community responders – firefighters with full police powers – have also been deployed in collaboration with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, with four police and fire community support officers serving rural North Devon. Helping homeless: The Outreach Team - Credit: Submitted A new fund-raising initiative to help the homeless in North Devon has topped the £1,000 mark. ‘Tap for North Devon’ was launched a few weeks before Christmas in Barnstaple. The North Devon and Torridge Community Safety Partnership, assisted by One Northern Devon, sought funding from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Towns project for two ‘Tap for North Devon’ pay points which were installed in Barnstaple town centre. They allow shoppers to easily tap their contactless payment cards or mobile phones to donate £3 to North Devon’s local homeless charities Encompass South West and The Freedom Community Alliance. ....
