Jensen won first place for her video detailing two men’s efforts to continue their non-profits’ giving during the pandemic. Long Beach Post Visuals Editor Thomas R. Cordova won a third place award for the same category for his video showing a Long Beach “makeup lady” who travels to Skid Row every weekend where she takes beauty products and other necessities to the homeless.
Cordova also won two second place awards for general news for his photo showing a protester staring down Long Beach Police Department officers during the civil unrest in Long Beach in May 2020.
Jensen and Cordova shared a second place award for their work on a video telling the story of a barber overcoming an aneurysm to continue to cut hair and start a nonprofit helping homeless youth. ....

Improving financial outlook in La Verne means some budget cuts may be restored [Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Calif.]
Feb. 3 Though it anticipated a significant shortfall in sales tax revenue last spring, the city of La Verne is projecting a much rosier outlook for the current fiscal year.
The city expects to see $4.5 million in sales tax revenue for the 2020-21 fiscal year, which began July 1. The latest projection is $650,000 ahead of what the city forecasted when it originally adopted its budget in June. At the time, the city said it anticipated a total of $3.85 million in sales tax revenues. But those forecasts have improved steadily over the past six months, with the city increasing its projected sales tax revenues to $4.2 million in October before the latest update. ....

He was a Black man whose last name was Jews. If someone were inclined to be prejudiced, that might have been two strikes against Jimmy Jews. When introduced, he got jokes and double-takes.
“That’s my name. We just gotta deal with it,” Jews would say, putting people at ease.
He had more significant hurdles than his name, and he overcame those too. Jews was the first Black firefighter in San Bernardino.
I bring this up because Jews died last month at age 79. And his story is a fascinating one. ....
