Between the Jan. 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol and the peaceful protests at the Illinois State Capitol and throughout the country following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police on May 25, she posed a question, How much do you tell a nine-year-old about what s going on?
Her son, Grayson, is a third-grader at Lindsay Elementary School. While she was unable to answer every one of his questions over the last year, she was able to answer the question she posed. ....

Evanston Live TV owner Meleika Gardner educates, advocates, inspire


“I just grabbed my phone and hit the streets,” she said.
Four years later and during another local election cycle the Evanston Chamber of Commerce has honored Gardner as the 2021 Community Leadership Person of the Year. Her platform, which produces content covering local politics, social justice efforts and community leaders, now has more than 44,000 views on YouTube and over 6,000 Facebook followers.
Catching the “entertainment bug” early in her life, Gardner moved to Los Angeles as a young woman and worked as both a touring dancer and casting director before she returned to Evanston in 2013.
“Once you know you’re this artistic, creative person, I don’t think it ever leaves you,” she said. “You feel like you’re dying when you’re doing anything other than (entertainment).” ....

Education bill to revamp social studies


Includes heavier emphasis on computer science and computer literacy
This story is part of an ongoing Lame Duck Look Back series in which Capitol News Illinois is following up on the major bills that passed both chambers of the General Assembly in the Jan. 8-13 lame duck session.
Social studies classes in Illinois public schools are about to get a major overhaul, with more emphasis on Black history and the contributions of other underrepresented groups to American culture.
In addition, within the next few years, all school districts in the state will be required to offer computer science courses and more instruction in computer literacy. ....

CAPITOL RECAP: Mitigations Scaled Back in Several Regions

Only one of the state’s 11 COVID-19 mitigation regions remains at the highest level of restricted activity Thursday, Jan. 21, as the statewide case positivity rate continues to decline.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Thursday that Region 7, which includes Will and Kankakee counties, was moved to Tier 1 mitigations, while Region 6 in east-central Illinois moved back to base Phase 4 guidelines.
That left only Region 4 in the Metro East region near the St. Louis, Missouri, border in the strictest Tier 3 mitigations.
“I am excited that 10 out of our 11 regions have moved out of Tier 3 mitigations,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news release. “However, this does not mean we can let our guard down. We must continue to practice actions to protect ourselves from the virus – wear our masks, avoid large gatherings, and get the vaccine when it is our turn.
