City budget rebounds from pandemic losses

After dire warnings of multi-year shortfalls just last year, City Hall has released a new budget that projected no deficits in coming years.
The City of Santa Monica has released its proposed Biennial Budget for Fiscal Years 2021-23, and Interim City Manager Lane Dilg said Santa Monica’s long-term goals are still attainable due to a combination of budget cuts and rebounding revenue streams.
Last year, in the midst of historic volatility and the economic devastation brought on by the pandemic, staff’s forecast detailed an annual General Fund deficit of $48 million, $102 million and $74 million over the coming years. The proposed budget released Monday reflects no deficit either now or in the associated five-year forecast. ....

State of the City shares grief, resilience, and optimism in touching virtual event

A far call from the usual joyous gathering, Thursday’s State of the City event was nevertheless a poignant one peppered with tales of tenacity, reflections of loss, and renewed hope for the road ahead.
This year’s annual summit, hosted by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, brought residents together over Zoom for a moving evening with speeches from Mayor Sue Himmelrich, Chamber President Laurel Rosen, Interim City Manager Lane Dilg, and Congressman Ted Lieu.
Space was held to honor and acknowledge the losses and sacrifices of community members over the past year, including the 135 residents who passed away due to Covid-19. ....

Bike shops were one of the businesses with unique problems caused by the pandemic. With residents forced to look for new recreation options, sales surged at local shops however stores were unable to find enough bikes to sell as inventory pipelines collapsed. Repair wait times skyrocketed as thousands of residents tried to fix old equipment. Similar shortages hit products like camping equipment, baking supplies, home office equipment and outdoor heaters as various industries reacted to pandemic restrictions. 
Businesses began closing permanently due to the pandemic. Restaurants like Ippudo Ramen, Dialogue, Enterprise Fish Co. and Panini Grill were among the eateries who didn’t survive the year while the closures also claimed various retail establishments. ....
