Northwestern breathing easier with 'significant carryover' money

KEY ACTION  The board of education approved the treasurer s agenda, which projected a much improved financial status for the district.
KEY DISCUSSION  The board discussed the good news of the district s financial rally, which Superintendent Jeffrey Layton attributed to a number of factors, ranging from reducing expenditures to receiving federal stimulus money.
Layton cited a significant carryover balance of $4.6 million. Included in the calculations are raises over the next three years tentatively agreed to. The (fiscal) picture looks pretty good right now.
Quarterly financial meetings with a diverse membership are targeted at developing a long-term plan to sustain financial stability once the stimulus money runs out, Layton said. ....

Northwestern Local School District approves layoffs for 2020-21

KEY ACTION The Northwestern Local School District Board of Education approved staff layoffs for the 2021-22 school year, but intends at its March 15 meeting to reinstate some of the positions using federal grant dollars instead of general fund operating money. Superintendent Jeffrey Layton also announced paying off district buildings in April – three years early.
KEY DISCUSSION The board approved the following positions to be RIF d (reduced in force or cut) for the 2021-22 school year: high school Spanish teacher/tutor, middle school technology teacher, middle school health and physical education teacher, high school paraprofessional aide, part-time secretary, one-fourth high school intervention specialist, one-fourth high school computer science, elementary/high school custodian, two elementary school paraprofessional aides, two middle school paraprofessional aides, a bus driver, and a middle school ISS paraprofessional aide. ....
