PARIS (Reuters) -Thousands of victims of defective breast implants manufactured in France should receive compensation, a Paris appeals court ruled on Thursday after deciding that German firm TUV Rheinland was negligent in awarding safety certificates.

The case was brought by 2,700 women who said they had suffered long-term health problems after receiving the implants made by PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) which were filled with cheap, industrial-grade silicone not cleared for human use. ....

AI helps assess patient s risk of regenerative outcomes after treatment of peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis, a condition where tissue and bone around dental implants becomes infected, besets roughly one-quarter of dental implant patients, and currently there s no reliable way to assess how patients will respond to treatment of this condition.
To that end, a team led by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry developed a machine learning algorithm, a form of artificial intelligence, to assess an individual patient s risk of regenerative outcomes after surgical treatments of peri-implantitis.
The algorithm is called FARDEEP, which stands for Fast and Robust Deconvolution of Expression Profiles. In the study, researchers used FARDEEP to analyze tissue samples from a group of patients with peri-implantitis who were receiving reconstructive therapy. They quantified the abundance of harmful bacteria and certain infection fighting immune cells in each sample. ....

Researchers from London South Bank University (LSBU) are leading an international project aimed at reducing bacterial infection during the surgical process of medical implants. The team of academics is working to understand how the antibacterial properties found in many animals and plants can be used in medical implants. Dragonfly wings, lotus leaves and cicada wings possess body features that can kill bacteria.
The researchers are studying surface structures using robust precision measurement systems to create efficient antibacterial surfaces by using advanced lasers and 3D computer models. ....
