CAIRO – In support of Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity (MOSS) and in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) launched today a three-day training to develop counselling and monitoring capacity of MOSS’s community workers.
Through the training, community health workers are working under the national ‘First 1,000 Days’ programme on increasing the nutrition and health knowledge of pregnant and nursing mothers of children under 2 who are supported by the programme. ....

Yasmina El Habbal long dreamed of giving birth to a daughter and planned to name her Ghalia, Arabic for âprecious.â She never got married, and never did.
But in an Egyptian orphanage at age 40, she finally found her Ghalia: a fussy baby girl with large brown eyes who promptly fell asleep in her arms.
âGod has created her for me,â El Habbal said. âThereâs no way I could have loved her more or become more attached to her had I given birth to her myself.â
Adoption in the strict sense of the word, with children taking on all the legal rights of biological offspring, is not allowed under Islam, which emphasizes the importance of preserving blood lineage. Instead there is Kafala, an alternative care system under which adults can become guardians of orphaned children. ....

Operational Updates
• As of 30 November 2020, a total of 115,541 COVID-19 cases and 6,636 deaths were confirmed in Egypt (EgyptToday). The Government has warned of a gradual increase in COVID-19 cases and issued stricter enforcement of protective measures (e.g. use of facemasks) in all public spaces and transportation.
• As part of the global campaign of ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’, WFP in coordination with the Ministry of Education and National Council for Women are providing online webinars targeting community school students in 7 governorates. The webinars are conducted online through the use of interactive and engaging educational content on gender-based violence delivered through the use of tablets provided by WFP. ....
