One day before the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung is grabbing attention over whether she will become the first South Korean to win an acting award at the Oscars.
The 73-year-old screen veteran was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in the immigration film Minari.
Youn plays Soon-ja, an eccentric grandmother who flies to rural Arkansas from South Korea to help her daughter s family striving to build a new life in America.
Youn is competing against Maria Bakalova from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Glenn Close from Hillbilly Elegy, Olivia Colman from The Father and Amanda Seyfried from Mank. ....

South Korean screen veteran Youn Yuh-jung has risen to become a safe front-runner in the race for the 2021 Oscars best supporting actress for her role in the immigration film Minari, a poll by an American awards prediction website showed Wednesday.
As of 10 a.m., the 74-year-old actress garnered 4,583 votes from experts, editors and internet users to rank No. 1 in Gold Derby s Oscars race poll, greatly outpacing four other nominees in the category. ....

South Korean screen veteran Youn Yuh-jung has won best supporting actress for her role in the immigration film Minari at this year s British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.
At the ceremony of the BAFTA Film Awards held at London s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday (British time), Youn took home the award for best supporting actress.
She beat Maria Bakalova for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Niamh Algar for Calm with Horses, Kosar Ali for Rocks and Ashley Madekwe for County Lines. ....

 South Korean screen veteran Youn Yuh-jung has won best supporting actress for her role in the immigration film “Minari” at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.
At the ceremony of the BAFTA Film Awards held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday (British time), Youn took home the award for best supporting actress.
She beat Maria Bakalova for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” Niamh Algar for “Calm with Horses,” Kosar Ali for “Rocks” and Ashley Madekwe for “County Lines.”
Youn took a role of the livewire grandmother Soonja in “Minari,” written and directed by Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung, which tells the story of a Korean immigrant family settling in rural Arkansas. ....
