Savannah ER doctor sees uptick in accidental overdoses in children

Doctors are seeing an uptick in accidental overdoses in children in the Savannah area, said Dr. Brian Coleman, medical director of the pediatric emergency room at the Memorial Health Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children s Hospital of Savannah.
Coleman said the children s ER had seen about 15 cases since opening in March. That s about double the normal rate. Commonly ingested drugs are opioids and marijuana in the form of edibles, or marijuana-infused foods.
Coleman isn t entirely sure what s behind the trend.
It may be that with the pandemic, and people being in the house more, it just provides more opportunity for kids to explore, he said. And you know, kids are like little bloodhounds, and they will find stuff on the floor and under couches. ....

Drug Take Back Day is April 24 - Daily Advocate

Drug Take Back Day is April 24
My name is Regann Rutschilling, a final-year pharmacy student working with Family Health Services of Darke County, and I am writing to inform you of their upcoming Drug Take Back Day to be held on April 24, 2021 at Family Health Pharmacy in Greenville, Ohio. At this event, the community members are invited to bring in their unused, expired, or unwanted over-the counter and prescription medications and the staff at Family Health Pharmacy will properly dispose of the medications for them.
Many of us in the community have unused prescriptions, medications that are expired, and over-the-counter medications we no longer need. Proper disposal of the medication avoids accidents, such as poisoning of children and pets or misuse by other individuals. According to the U.S. Poison Control Centers, unintentional ingestion of pain medications are the leading cause of death in young children and over 40 percent of adult poisonings are medication related. I ....

New COVID-19 strain could increase chances for reinfection
Researchers analyzing preliminary data of recently discovered COVID-19 mutations in South Africa and Brazil say the new variants exhibit a higher possibility of reinfection as well as evasion of immune responses.

By: CBS News
More than half of hand sanitizers imported from Mexico contain dangerous levels of toxic ingredients and should not be used by consumers, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In January alone, more than 900 accidental poisonings involving hand sanitizer were reported in the U.S., the overwhelming majority involving young children.
The FDA on Tuesday issued a countrywide import alert for alcohol-based hand sanitizers from Mexico, the agency s latest attempt to address a pandemic-induced spike in products contaminated with methanol, or wood alcohol.
