With a new solo show opening at Edinburgh s Jupiter Artland in a week, Rachel Maclean talks to Fisun Güner about film-making, fairytales, and looking forward
The imagery is often violent – tongues get cut out, noses yanked off, human limbs cannibalised. The world of Scottish artist Rachel Maclean is a Grand Guignol horror show, but the horror comes encased in a big, gooey powder-pink meringue. Her films capture something of the heightened aesthetics of My Little Pony, but the appropriation and hybridity of pop-visual cultures is far-ranging, from Disney to video games, pop videos and stage musicals, social media, and even – especially when she dwells on Scottish identity – the 18th and 19th century political satires of Hogarth and Cruickshank. And just as we’re getting hopelessly lost in these pimped-up surreal fantasias, the presence of emojis and hearts pull us into an instantly recognisable online world. ....

HAL Holbrook, who has died aged 95, was a Tony and Emmy award-winning actor who carried a quiet authority in everything he appeared in. This came with added menaces for his iconic cameo in All the President’s Men, Alan J Pakula’s 1976 film about the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency. 
Holbrook played Deep Throat, the shadowy informant who meets the Washington Post investigative journalist Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) in an underground car park. With Holbrook’s face barely visible in the three brief but intense scenes shared by the pair, Deep Throat teases out his secrets in a cigarette-charged rasp that changes the course of American history. ....

Jane Drew Prize for women in architecture awarded to Kate Macintosh


Scottish architect Kate Macintosh has been awarded this year s Jane Drew Prize in recognition of her contribution to elevating the profile of women in architecture.
Macintosh, now retired, was selected in celebration of her work in public architecture and advocation for the use of buildings as a tool for social justice since the 1960s.
The Jane Drew Prize is awarded annually by the Architects Journal and The Architectural Review as part of its W awards series, formerly known as the Women in Architecture awards.
Previous winners of the prize, which is named after modernist pioneer Jane Drew, include the likes of Denise Scott Brown, Amanda Levete and Pakistan s first female architect, Yasmeen Lari. ....
