Online Harms Bill is a watershed moment - your views

Online Harms Bill is a watershed moment
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, online grooming crimes in Scotland were more that 30% higher when children were not at school compared with the same months last year.
The NSPCC has been calling for legislation to protect children from grooming, abuse and harmful content online, since 2017. After years of campaigning, on December 15 the UK government announced the framework for a future Online Harms Bill that has the potential to provide much greater protection for children when they use the internet.

READERS' LETTERS: Look forward with optimism now Brexit deal is done

© Rick Findler/Shutterstock
Brexiteers celebrate as they attend a gathering on Parliament Square in central London in celebration of the official moment the United Kingdom left the EU (January 2020).
Sir, – Now that the Brexit deal is finally done, can we please go into the new year looking forward with optimism and resolve.
All the predictions of doom and gloom from self-interested pundits, have proved groundless, but nevertheless that doesn’t stop Nicola Sturgeon reminding everyone in her tweets that Scotland had always wanted to remain in the EU.
What a negative and hypocritical person we have as our first minister, who has always, she tells us, wanted Scotland to be an independent country. ....

Selfish behaviour of those travelling won't help us to 'beat Covid-19'

I MUST admit I share the concerns of private care home owners that the Scottish Government may simply nationalise the private care home sector in Scotland in response to the coronavirus outbreak. We still need a thorough review of everything that has happened in the care sector since the initial lockdown back in March.
However, the initial findings that private care homes had far more outbreaks of Covid than those run by either the public or the voluntary sector raise some serious concerns. There are question marks over whether the drive for profit meant that these private care homes ignored guidance on infection control. ....

Readers' Letters: All I want for Christmas is... Covid?

Following the celebrations of Thanksgiving, the United States has experienced a huge upsurge in the level of infections and concomitant deaths and there is every possibility that we could face a similar experience at Christmas.
Covid-19 i s now endemic in our country and will continue to be potentially lethal to the elderly and those with underlying health problems. The transmission of the virus is especially dangerous indoors where there is little air movement. In this environment, the virus can be easily dispersed from an infected person’s nose and mouth in the form of an aerosol of floating invisible and potentially lethal particles. Transmission can be reduced significantly by the adoption of the well-documented procedures of hand sanitation, the wearing of masks and social distancing, but these crude tools cannot eliminate risk of infection entirely. In most houses at Christmas, people are typically near each other, with the added risk factors of raised voices and the i ....
