The new version of a bill that advanced through a North Carolina House committee on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, could spell the end for a longtime state law requiring permits for pistol purchases.
RALEIGH, N.C. A longtime North Carolina law requiring pistol purchase permits could be repealed under a new version of a bill that advanced through a House committee on Tuesday.
The law requires buyers of handguns to obtain a permit from a local sheriff and undergo a background check. Rep. Jay Adams, a Hickory Republican and lead sponsor of the bill, called the law obsolete and said the emphasis should be on the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. ....

Apr. 21 RALEIGH A longtime North Carolina law requiring pistol purchase permits could be repealed under a new version of a bill that advanced through a House committee on Tuesday.
The law requires buyers of handguns to obtain a permit from a local sheriff and undergo a background check. Rep. Jay Adams, a Hickory Republican and lead sponsor of the bill, called the law obsolete and said the emphasis should be on the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Eddie Caldwell Jr., executive vice president and general counsel of the North Carolina Sheriffs Association, said the group previously opposed the repeal but that times have changed as the national system has improved. ....

A proposed bill in the NC Senate would improve government transparency


The act, S.B. 355, filed March 25, would open more records of state and local employees to the public so not only could you see if and when a police officer, teacher or state Department of Revenue auditor was disciplined, demoted or fired, but why.
“It’s a good first step in increasing trust in government,” said state Sen. Joyce Kraweic, the bill’s primary sponsor.

The North Carolina Press Association, which actively supports the bill, calls this a “big step” that will “open the door slightly.” Current state law makes the written notice including the “specific acts or omissions” for which an employee was fired available. But S.B. 355 would open up the reasons for every “promotion, demotion, dismissal, transfer, suspension, separation, or other change in position classification” making them subject to open records law. ....
