Planning to set off fireworks? There's a $500 fine in Edmonds, and a new ban in unincorporated SW Snohomish County

If you are planning to launch fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July this year, take note: Fireworks use is banned in unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, and there is now a $500 fine for those setting off fireworks in Edmonds.
South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes noted in a press release that fireworks use is now banned year-round in South County Fire’s entire service area, including the cities of Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and unincorporated neighborhoods.  (See map)
In addition, those setting off fireworks in Edmonds now face a stiff penalty if they are caught. The Edmonds City Council in September 2020 voted unanimously to get tougher on those who set off illegal fireworks in the city to the tune of $500 for a first-time offense. ....

George Floyd vigil in Edmonds attracts dozens seeking an end to police violence

Dozens of people attended a “stop the hate” vigil at Edmonds United Methodist Church Wednesday night, standing in solidarity for the George Floyd family.
Floyd, a Black man, died May 25, 2020, after Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, knelt on his neck for almost 10 minutes, causing national and worldwide protests. Chauvin was found guilty of both murder and manslaughter April 20 and will be sentenced sometime next month.
With the theme, “where’s there’s people, there’s power,” the vigil was held outdoors on church grounds with social distancing in effect, and included outdoor activities based on understanding and ending racism. ....

Grocery store workers in Edmonds will receive $4 an hour in hazard pay until Washington s state of emergency is lifted by Governor Jay Inslee.

EDMONDS, Wash. The Edmonds City Council voted Tuesday to approve hazard pay for grocery store workers in the city until Washington s state of emergency is lifted. 
The proposal was brought forward by Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson. It gives a $4 per hour raise to grocery store workers within the city of Edmonds. The ordinance impacts grocery stores that employ 500 or more employees statewide. Nelson modeled the proposal after a similar proposal in Seattle that passed earlier this year.  ....

Edmonds City Councilmember Luke Distelhorst on Wednesday announced his campaign to retain his Position 2 seat, to which he was appointed in January 2020.
“When my council position began I could not ever have imagined how quickly our world would change,” he said. “Responding to the pandemic and keeping Edmonds residents safe and healthy became my primary focus. My heart goes out to the families, friends and neighbors who have lost loved ones, jobs, and are experiencing overwhelming hardship due to COVID-19.”
In response to the emergency, Distelhorst noted he authored a residential eviction moratorium and the Housing and Relief Program that eventually distributed $580,000 to Edmonds residents. Representing the council on the city’s Recovery Task Force kept Distelhorst involved in tackling community health and safety issues and navigating how to best support the unique small businesses located ....
