Edward L. Childs


Edward Lee Childs of Norton, who served as town assessor in Sandwich for 33 years, died June 17 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Childs, 63, had a year-long battle with hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer.
He was the husband of Barbara Russell-Childs, to whom was married for 35 years.
The son of Robert and Pauline Childs, he grew up in Barnstable. After graduating from Barnstable High School, he continued his education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, from which he received a bachelor’s degree in political science.
He began his career as the assistant of assessing for the Town of Barnstable. In 1988, he became the director of assessing for the Town of Sandwich and loved the town, its people, and the staff in all the departments of Sandwich Town Hall. ....
