THE ISSUE: Itâs Monday, the day we take a few moments to highlight the good news in Lancaster County. Renaming schools is bound to be a contentious matter, and there were more than two great options available for the School District of Lancaster at last weekâs school board meeting.
But we believe the board hit home runs with the two choices it made. The district âwill rename two of its schools after Black women as part of a districtwide effort to rename buildings named after slave owners and others who donât fit the city school districtâs values,â LNP | LancasterOnlineâs Alex Geli reported Friday. ....

JACKSON MIDDLE SCHOOL. JACKSON WAS AN ENGLISH TEACHER AT HAND FROM 1961 TO 197 SHE WAS THE FIRST FEMALE, BLACK TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY’S FIRST BLACK PROFESSOR. Blades on fan located over prep table contain static dust and has the potential to contaminate food below. Wood pretzel paddle is no longer a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Food facility has available chlorine sanitizer test strips; however, they are the wrong type. There are several broken, cracked and missing floor tiles throughout facility, rendering the floor not smooth and easily cleanable. Tape is being used to cover holes near threshold of storage room; repeat violation. Carpet mats are being used as a floor covering in the food prep area, which are not smooth easily cleanable surfaces; repeat violation. ....

PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL DISTRICT close to renaming middle school

The School District of Lancaster will soon decide on what to rename the former Edward Hand Middle School, which was named after a slave owner.There are three finalists for the new name, including Hazel Jackson, who was the first Black woman to teach in Lancaster.Born in South Carolina, Jackson taught in the segregated south before moving north, where she hoped to find greater opportunities. After nine years of rejection, she took a bold step. She just sat in the superintendent’s office every Friday. After waiting several years, and finally said, ‘I m just going to sit here.’ And she sat there until they finally gave her a break when there was an opening, said Jackson’s granddaughter, Amber Holland.After teaching in the School district of Lancaster Jackson went on to become the first Black professor at Millersville University, where she taught English literature until her retirement in 1994. ....

Hazel Jackson, Leon 'Buddy' Glover, Barack Obama among nominees for renaming Lancaster schools

Hazel Jackson, Leon âBuddyâ Glover and Barack Obama are among the names School District of Lancaster is considering to rename two of its schools.
The school districtâs 15-member renaming committee this week unveiled five options for Southeast Middle School, formerly Edward Hand Middle School, and seven for Buchanan Elementary School.
Itâs the latest development in a process that started last summer to rename up to five Lancaster schools to reflect the districtâs values today. The school board began by stripping Edward Hand Middle School of its name in June 2020, after community members pushed for the removal of the former Revolutionary War general and slave ownerâs name from the school. ....
