Mexico Natural Gas Market Spotlight: West Coast Supporting Demand, Prices
Strong demand on Mexico’s Pacific Coast helped prop upWaha’s May bidweek price, which jumped 31.0 cents month/month to average $2.685.
Spurred by new infrastructure and demand on the West Coast, Mexico imports via pipeline from the United States have been unseasonably strong, spiking to a record 7.1 Bcf/d in mid-April. Analysts at Energy Aspects said trade has since “tempered,” although it is still above the pre-spike baseline.
NGI calculations had Mexico imports from the United States at 6.48 Bcf on Thursday.
Recent pipeline interconnections, including Grupo Carso’s 472 MMcf/d Samalayuca-Sásabe pipeline, are allowing Waha gas to serve power plants in Empalme and Puerto Libertad, Gadex consultant Eduardo Prud’homme told

Mexico Natural Gas Market Spotlight: As Peak Season Approaches, All Eyes on Rising Imports

Mexico Natural Gas Market Spotlight: As Peak Season Approaches, All Eyes on Rising Imports
Mexico’s natural gas market is importing more U.S. supply as the country’s economy and its weather heat up for summer and peak demand.
A single day U.S.-to-Mexico record was broken on April 14 when exports reached 7.1 Bcf/d, prompting analysts to adjust their import models upward.
Wood Mackenzie revised higher its summer forecast made in February by 400 MMcf/d, setting pipeline imports from the United States at an average of 6.7 Bcf/d for April-October. Gelber & Associates Inc. senior market analyst Dan Myers said Thursday he sees current flows to Mexico from the United States at around 6.5-7 Bcf/d.

Mexico Competition Monitor Urges Against 'Detrimental' Changes to Hydrocarbons Law

Mexico Competition Monitor Urges Against ‘Detrimental’ Changes to Hydrocarbons Law
Mexico’s antitrust watchdogComisión Federal de Competencia Económica (Cofece) has sent a letter to Mexico’s Congress decrying proposed changes to the nation’s Ley de Hidrocarburos, or Hydrocarbons Law.
“We recommend the reform to the Hydrocarbons Law isn’t approved,” President Jana Palacios said on Twitter. She suggested the proposed changes would be damaging to competition in the nation’s energy sector. “Without competition, the risk is that prices will rise.”
In late March, Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent a bill to Congress to amend the Hydrocarbons Law. The amended law would give the state greater control over granting and revoking permits in the oil, gas and petrochemicals business.
