Air France-KLM sent into the air what the company called its first long-haul flight powered by sustainable aviation fuel - petroleum mixed with a synthetic jet fuel derived from waste cooking oils.
The fuel used for the Paris-to-Montreal flight is part of efforts by the industry worldwide to experiment with alternative sources as regulators and governments tighten emissions rules for the coming decades. Other airlines and plane-makers are also experimenting with using varying levels of biofuels or different kinds of sustainable fuel.
The passenger jet took off with sustainable fuel making up 16 per cent of its supply for the journey. Air France-KLM announced its initiative by the tarmac at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Joining France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith at the event were Total oil company CEO Patrick Pouyanne and Airbus President Guillaume Fau ....

Federal COVID-19 funding means new boilers, better air at Milton High

MILTON
Officials wanted to replace two 58-year-old boilers at Milton High School but couldn’t fit the cost into the 2019 referendum.
But new boilers are now a part of the ongoing high school expansion project, which will mean better air for staff and students, thanks in part to federal COVID-19 relief funding for schools.
The school board on Monday approved using part of Milton’s allotment from the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, known as ESSER III, for the work, not to exceed $560,000.
ESSER III would contribute $424,000 to the boiler project. The rest would come from contingency funding from the referendum, money the board approved last fall to replace circulating pumps. ....

U.S. farmer Rob Arkfeld was vacationing on a sandy beach in Mexico s Riviera Maya when he won an online auction to rent 535 acres of cropland back home in Iowa by bidding nearly double the local average for each acre.
While sipping a drink and swiping his smartphone, the 48-year-old agreed to pay an annual rent of $417.50 per acre for the next two years for the ground in Mills County. That amount is big enough not just to rent, but to buy land in some parts of the United States. ....

U.S. renewable fuel credits soared on Tuesday to the highest on record, as higher costs for soybean oil pushed up both renewable fuel and biomass-based credits, traders said.
Renewable fuel (D6) credits for 2021 traded at $1.50 each, up from $1.44 in the previous session, traders said. Biomass-based (D4) credits traded at $1.58 each, up from $1.52 previously.
Both were the highest since Reuters began reporting data for renewable fuel credits in 2013 and biomass-based credits in 2014. ....

China issued guidelines on Wednesday recommending the reduction of corn and soymeal in pig and poultry feed, a measure that could reshape the flow of grains into the world s top corn and soybean buyer.
China s corn prices surged more than a third in the most recent year following a drop in output and state stockpiles. The country started importing a lot more corn to compensate for the domestic deficit. So feed makers have already been switching to cheaper alternatives, especially wheat. ....
