Heart surgery services at a major hospital were dysfunctional, grossly understaffed and pervaded by bullying, which put the care of patients at risk, according to a scathing review obtained by the Herald.

A Far North fitness group have walked over 2500km and raised over $2000 for Whangārei children s charity Kind Hands. The group, led by Opua-based OutFit North personal trainer Nadine Amsler, hiked numerous walking tracks around the country, including many in Paihia, Kerikeri, Russell and Cape Reinga, for this year s Classic Builders 90 More Miles Challenge. The event, held throughout March, raised money for the Kind Hands respite care cottage, which offers respite care for children aged under six who have a disability or are medically fragile. Paora Tiatoa (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Raukawa) opened his Beauty and the Beast exhibition at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre last Friday night. Around 50 people attended the opening, which began with a moving karakia and whakatau.
Those in attendance had a chance to win some of Tiatoa s work, with a raffle-like giveaway taking place for three of his prints. Delays and cost rises are dogging repairs of defective Auckland high-rise apartment block Victopia which, instead of costing $23.1million to remediate, will cost at least $35.2m.
Ian Harris, project manager for the apartment residents via
their body corporate, wrote to owners who have endured two years of repairs with substantial work yet to do.
Harris wrote about the costs and holdups fixing the 16-level block [14 apartment levels with two basements] on the Nelson St/Victoria St corner opposite TVNZ. ....
