A commuting canon in the Erie-based Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania is headed to South Carolina to become a bishop.
The Rev. Ruth Woodliff-Stanley is canon for strategic change in the Episcopal Dioceses of Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania. The bishop for those partnered dioceses in Buffalo and Erie is the Right Rev. Sean Rowe.
Woodliff-Stanley was elected this month as the 15th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. After her Oct. 2 consecration, she will be the first female to serve as bishop in the more than 200-year history of the Charleston-based diocese, officials said.

The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, which is still in the midst of a yearslong legal battle with a breakaway group over several church properties, has elected its first female bishop.
The Rev. Canon Ruth Woodliff-Stanley won the election on the second ballot at a special meeting of the convention held by the diocese on Saturday, beating out four other candidates.
On the second ballot, Woodliff-Stanley received 13 votes in the Lay Order, which required at least 10 votes to win, and 26 votes in the Clergy Order, which required at least 18 votes to win. ....
