Tens of thousands of tiny living mussels may hold the key to cleaning up Auckland s polluted Waitematā Harbour.
Auckland Council and local iwi on Thursday unveiled their unique weapons on a rope which have been barged in to improve water quality in a new public space opening on the city s waterfront.
Mussels are being heralded as a saviour for downtown Auckland, with 38 laden ropes stretching over half a kilometre placed in the harbour. ....

King Canute - you could call Eric van Essen that because he s headed the $73 million project to hold back the sea from Auckland s CBD.
Yet for Auckland Transport s downtown programme director, he gives kudos
to the team who worked on the 600m long stretch.

The seawall is an incredible achievement given the fact it s been a long time in the planning and to have significant investment completed. It strengthens Quay St for the next 100 years, he said. ....

Seemingly floating above the Downtown Ferry Basin, Te Wānanga, the new downtown public space is an impressive feat of engineering.
Eric van Essen, Programme Director of the Downtown Programme says over the last year thousands of tonnes of reinforcing steel and concrete has been used to create this new waterfront public space.
The Downtown Programme is delivered by Auckland Transport for Auckland Council.
In a video released today, the extent of the works to construct the platform that extends over the Waitematā Harbour is revealed.

Mr van Essen says Te Wānanga was conceived and co-designed with mana whenua to be a tidal shelf interspersed with ‘pool’ apertures shedding light into the depths below. ....

Auckland s 600m-long Quay St seawall strengthening project was completed a fortnight ago, beating its projected deadline and coming in up to $2 million under budget.
Eric van Essen, Auckland Transport s downtown programme director, said today
the Ferry Basin seawall project had met the completion target in mid-January. The job was due to finish in either January or February so it was done early.

My understanding is that we re coming in under budget as well, he said. Final costs are yet to be confirmed but a $1m to $2m saving on the original $75m budget is anticipated. ....
