Watch: Deserted streets in St Vincent covered in ash from La Soufriere volcano

Volcanic ash has covered the island of Saint Vincent in the Caribbeans, after the La Soufriere eruptions.
Footage shows houses and streets covered in a grey blanket, which results from hot ash mixing with rain.
Thousands were forced to evacuate when La Soufriere erupted and many more are now avoiding venturing outside.
La Soufriere erupted back into life on Friday after decades of inactivity, pumping dark clouds of ash into the air and prompting an evacuation by sea and land of thousands of nearby residents.
No deaths have been reported so far but a roughly a third of the island is off limits and airspace remains closed while power and water supply is intermittent in some communities. ....

Large plumes of ash cloud continue to rise from an active volcano on the island of St Vincent
14 April 2021 • 6:59am
A timelapse video shows large plumes of ash cloud rising into the sky from the La Soufriere volcano on St Vincent on Tuesday, after the volcano erupted again on the tiny eastern Caribbean island.
The volcano first erupted on Friday morning after decades of inactivity,  and several major explosions have occurred since then.
The large ash cloud from the volcano could also be seen from neighbouring Saint Lucia.
Experts warned the activity could continue for days or even weeks. So far, no deaths have been reported but a roughly a third of the island is off limits. ....

St. Vincent Volcano Update As Residents Urged To Leave: 'It's Not a Nice Way To Go'

St. Vincent Volcano Update As Residents Urged To Leave: It s Not a Nice Way To Go
On 4/14/21 at 11:37 AM EDT
Pyroclastic flows headed down the eastern side of La Soufriѐre volcano in the Caribbean island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Wednesday as an ongoing eruption continued to generate explosive activity, the country s National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) said.
Pyroclastic flows are scorching hot, ground-hugging flows of ash, debris and gases that typically hit temperatures of 390-1,300 F and speeds of more than 400 mph. These flows are capable of destroying nearly everything in their path.
On Wednesday, Richard Robertson from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) warned anyone in the danger zone surrounding the volcano to evacuate immediately. ....

University of Leeds | News > Environment > Volcanic pollution link to respiratory disease increase

Respiratory disease increased markedly following one of Iceland’s largest volcanic eruptions, a new study has found.
The findings could have significant implications for actions taken to protect the health of the 800 million people living near active volcanoes. Only last month, lava burst through a crack in Iceland’s Mount Fagradalsfjall in the first eruption of its type for more than 800 years.
The new research, led by the Universities of Leeds and Iceland, examined the health impacts of pollution caused by the Holuhraun lava eruption in 2014-2015.
It showed that, following exposure to emissions that changed chemically from gas to fine particles, incidents of respiratory disease in Iceland rose by almost a quarter, and the incidence of asthma medication dispensing by a fifth. ....
