Volcanoes beneath ice in Antarctica could erupt and leave the planet "uninhabitable," warn researchers

What are underwater volcanoes?
Underwater volcanoes are also called submarine volcanoes. Experts estimate that there are around 1,500 active volcanoes on the surface of the plane, but there are at least 10,000 volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean alone.
Water exerts at least 250 times more pressure on the surface of the earth than air and this higher pressure can lead to an underwater explosion.
Because most underwater volcanoes erupt at a depth of about 2200 meters below sea level, where the pressure is more than 218 atmospheres, water can’t boil. The absence of a boiling sound makes it almost impossible to detect an underwater eruption, even with hydrophones or the underwater device used to detect and record ocean sounds from all directions. ....

Volcanic eruption looms in Iceland after 18,000 earthquakes struck over the past week

Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) detected around 3,300 earthquakes.
The earthquake swarm centers around Reykjanes Peninsula, a densely populated region south of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik. Authorities now expect one of two volcanoes in the peninsula, Mount Keilir and Mount Fagradalsfjall, to erupt in the next few days, which would be the first in the region in 800 years.
Earthquake swarm forbodes volcanic eruption
The swarm started on Feb. 24 with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake, the largest to date, and several rumblers followed since. Authorities are currently analyzing sensor and satellite-based monitoring data to determine the cause of the swarm. But most suspect that an intrusion of magma into Earth’s crust has been driving the event. ....
